Mark WingertsahnA one-time hobby, turned full-time business, is flourishing for Mark Wingertsahn. Mark is an award-winning potter who owns and operates Mornings’ Work PotteryCompany, a small pottery studio located in the mountains of North Georgia .

In 1992, being inspired by the area’s rich pottery heritage, Mark decided to focus his creativity exclusively on pottery making. Transforming his vision into a work of art was challenging as a novice. With no formal training in ceramics, a little help from friends and lots of determination, Mark created his first piece. With time and skill progression, he found himself drawn to the whimsical and is now best known for his hand-built birdhouses. The houses are functional being made to withstand the elements if hung out-of-doors. But often, the unique houses end up indoors, placed on the mantle or in a special nook. Mark’s wheel-thrown pottery (pots) and other unique sculptural pieces are also very poplar. In fact, his functional pottery has become a significant part of his total portfolio. Birdhouse collectors, pottery and Folk Art collectors, as well as those who have a passion for nature and the environment, are drawn to his work.

Pottery by Mark WingertsahnMark mixes his own stoneware clay body that he fires in an electric kiln to temperatures around 2100’F. He combines hand sculpturing and wheel throwing techniques to create his works and utilizes a wide range of glazes to produce the final product. Best of all, his work is always evolving and fresh!

Having worked with all ages, Mark thoroughly enjoys sharing his talents. His Whimsical, Hand-Built Clay Birdhouses class taught at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown , North Carolina is always great fun! He holds workshops for home-schoolers, churches, specialty shops and galleries, and other venues upon request.

Mark’s work has been exhibited in galleries and art festivals throughout the SoPottery by Mark Wingertsahnutheast. Notably, his works have been exhibited at the Hambidge Center in North Georgia, Folk Fest in Atlanta, the Catawba Valley Pottery Festival in Hickory, North Carolina, John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina and other local shops and galleries.

Mark is an active member of the High Country Artisans, a Blairsville, Georgia-based artisans’ guild. The group sponsors the annual “Butternut Creek Festival” held in Blairsville, in July. He is also an active member of the Union County Historical Society, which sponsors the annual “Mountain Marketplace Heritage Festival” held in Blairsville, on Labor Day weekend.
